Valeeya Blue is the daughter of the Blue clan leader and is working her way up the raider hierarchy. She works on the ship of her father’s old friend, Grizz. Her dream is to be a raid captain. Valeeya isn’t looking for marriage or children, just the next raid. With her on this mission is Ayl.
Ayl would like nothing more than to marry Valeeya. He was her first lover and he expected to be her last until he was seduced on the same night he made love to Valeeya by another woman. Ayl doesn’t so much love Valeeya as he loves the position of power he would be in by marrying the daughter of the clan leader. Valeeya wants nothing to do with him but that’s not stopping Ayl from pursuing her.
On this particular raid, the Sureblood clan has found the same vessel to raid. The rule of piracy is whoever gets there first gets the prize and both clans plan on being there first!
Dake Sureblood is the clan leader. He happens to be working this mission and is not letting the Blue clan get his prize! Dake never expected to be clan leader this young but when his father was killed in an accident, Dake had no choice but to assume the leadership role. His father had wanted to unite all the clans as does Dake but getting the other clans to agree would be almost impossible.
Breaking the rule of first come, first get, Dake moves his raiders onto the ore-stealing vessel. He quickly locates some of the Blue raiders but even more quickly all of the raiders realize that they had better work together if they plan of surviving the incoming attack by fighter planes! Can these to groups who dislike and distrust each other put aside their grudges long enough to work together?
Dake and the female leader of this Blue raider group seem to be attracted to each other. Will they even have enough time to explore this? Valeeya likes what she sees when looking at the Sureblood leader but can she trust him?
I have been a fan of Ms Grant’s writing for years.
Her futuristic worlds are so believable and its fantastic on how she ties them into Earth. While this book starts out with no mention of anything outside the Channels, by the end it is brought into her Borderlands series. You don’t have to read any of the previous books in this series to thoroughly enjoy this one. Instead, get ready to visit the clans and read a great story about pirates of the sky.
The characters are wonderful and multidimensional. Dake is more than the leader of the Sureblood clan. He’s a dreamer, a fighter and a lover. He has a spirit that won’t be broken and a temper that he sometimes has problems controlling. Valeeya is just as complex. She learns to be a strong leader as well as a loving mother. She needs to make tough decisions and needs to keep her emotions out of the picture. She plays many roles in this book and does each to the best of her ability. Ayl is a good raider but he’s also looking for the easy way to achieve his goals. I could go on and on as there are some fantastic secondary and not so secondary characters throughout this book but there is only so much space.
The book made all the situations feel real. While going between space ships, Valeeya remembers the dangers of being sucked into space. The fights and raids had a feel of danger and purpose letting you feel like you were there. The dance gave me the feel of freedom and joy. I wasn’t just reading about things, I was part of them.
Another awesome futuristic romance by Susan Grant. Her books just keep getting better and better as we explore the world she has developed. I can’t wait to see where we go next!
