Every year around this time we must prune the grapevines in our vineyard. This year it was so much easier than last year, our first winter living here. Before that who knows when anyone last trimmed the vines? The property had been neglected for a long time before we purchased it. This year it took about two weeks pruning on and off. But last year it took about 6 weeks! But the weather’s been glorious, sunny and mild, and it’s a beautiful chore when you can be out there in the sunshine listening to birdsong. Eventually we hope to make wine, but for the near future we just want to keep the vineyard alive until we can get irrigation to the vines.
As we were pruning back the dead canes and leaves we kept discovering these little nests, almost hummingbird size. I wonder to what kind of bird they belong. Finches, maybe? Any ideas?
Could be a finch nest, but being unfamiliar with where you live, it might be another small bird. So helpful, aren’t I? 😉
I had to comment again, because I’m envious of your weather. It’s 21 degrees here and we just had a few inches of snow fall last night. I’m definitely looking forward to spring!
Our weather HAS been so beautiful compared to the rest of the country. Trees have blossomed a full month early and the daffodils are already spent–crazy. But it’s also scary because it’s not a good thing, the drought for one–it’s not supposed to rain the rest of the month–and the sheer earliness of the spring… also not really a good thing.
That’s scary having everything come up a month early. Are those irrigation hoses on the ground in the picture?
I do hope the forecast is wrong and you get rain. We’ll just have to ship you some of our snow. Heck, New England and New York should tons of it they’d love to get rid of. 🙂
It is indeed (irrigation hose) but old and not connected. And I know! Too bad the snow can’t be shipped to replenish our dwindling snowpack!
